Pigmented Joust (#2)

Flowering from the fertile spirits and creative minds of eight well-respected San Luis Obispo artists, this protean canvas underwent nearly as many rebirths as the Dalai Lama. Peter Steynberg provided the original incarnation, the first of seven colorful compositions to be absorbed and replaced by another artist. (Some of these stages were documented, but a few of the earlier ones were unfortunately never photographed.) Coming in at number eight, Anne Stahl sanded down portions of the canvas to reveal some of its earlier layers, and then finished it off with a rich layer of pigmented beeswax, an ancient technique called encaustic painting.
